    The BodyWise Approach

    Learn About My Methods

“Mental illness is simply an imbalance within the interconnected mind-body system.”
    -Susy Potter

As the founder of BodyWise Psychotherapy, LLC I have a strong passion for supporting people to become BodyWise, or to be more aware of the information that is constantly being communicated between their mind and their body. Being a body-centered psychotherapist, I understand that often times mental health disorder is rooted in a lack of connection with the body. By creating a bridge between what we think, how we physically feel and how we experience the world, we can find harmony.

Here at BodyWise Psychotherapy we go beyond traditional talk therapy to offer you a holistic approach to counseling.

The Pillars of The BodyWise Approach:

    Dance/Movement Therapy

So what is Dance/Movement Therapy exactly? I love hearing this question and I do hear it quite often. Traditional talk therapy emphasizes the process of “thinking through” your problems in order to come away with a new perspective or tool to manage such challenges. Often times, the body gets left behind or simply is not addressed at all!

Well with a body-centered approach like Dance/Movement Therapy the body is not only part of the process but it is the central mode of assessment and intervention. Movement can provide a language for whatever may be occurring beneath the surface which you may have lost contact with or has become too painful to address. As a skilled and perceptive dance therapist I will meet you where you are and help you shift from surviving to thriving. Learn more about Dance/Movement Therapy here!

    Dialectical Behavior Therapy

The second pillar of the BodyWise approach is DBT. This approach to counseling is all about finding the balance in life with practical evidenced-based tools which you can practice outside of the therapy session. Having over 6 years of experience with DBT, I can teach you skills so that you can overcome whatever is holding you back from living a life worth living. Whether you are needing to get through a tragic event in your life, learn to manage your emotions, need support with significant relationships or simply want to find peace… through the philosophies of DBT I can provide a hands on approach to help you master your life.

    Mindfulness

Do you find yourself thinking about the past and feel as though you just can’t move on? Or perhaps your mind is active thinking about the future to the point that you feel worried and uneasy? Mindfulness can help you live your life NOW. It’s all about where you put your attention and through the philosophies and the practice of mindfulness you can master your attention and refocus on what is most important… enjoying THIS moment. As the third pillar of the BodyWise approach, I can help you be skillful with present moment awareness and therefore gain power and peace.

    Yoga

The fourth pillar of the BodyWise approach is the application of yogic philosophy and practices in counseling. If you are new to yoga perhaps what you know is the physical aspect and may think it’s a great way to get a work out. However, yoga is so much more! the term yoga is sanskrit word which means union. Through the practices of breath-work, mantra, movement and meditation you can gain many health benefits and deeper connection with yourself and the world around you. As a certified Sattva Yoga teacher I can provide you with a plethora of skills to guide you towards your goals.
